Jo JO HUMPHRIES
Jo began acting and directing at Nottingham University (1984 – 87) where she was studying for her BAJtHons in Classical Civilisation and Theology. She subsequently directed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (1987) with What Now Theatre Company before joining Cosmos English Theatre in Athens for her first acting job. After a year in Greece she returned to study acting at the Poor School, London for two years (1988 – 90) and on graduating, worked as actor/deviser with Black Swan Theatre Company (1991) and then with Pop Up Theatre (1991- 92). Whereas The Poor School provided Jo with an invaluable classical acting training, her work with both these companies expanded her knowledge and experience of devised and physical theatre.
In 1992 – 98 Jo lived and worked in Israel where she co-founded a physical theatre company Mimus, who opened the prestigious Haifa Children’s Theatre Festival in 1994. She also gained TV experience, acting for Israel Educational TV, and toured her own one-woman shows Eveline, and I Stand Here Ironing, backed by the British Council. In 1996 she joined Tel Aviv English Theatre, playing Rita in Educating Rita.
On her return to the UK, Jo began teaching drama and also studied for an MA Performing Arts at Middlesex University, and as a result founded Monkey Theatre (ages 7 – 15) at the Riverhouse Barn in Walton-on-Thames in 2005. She has now written and directed four highly acclaimed shows for children and young people and is currently preparing three more Monkey Shows for this season (www.monkeytheatre.co.uk). Her PGCE in Further Education (2004 – 05) has also given her experience of teaching older students and she has taught Performing Arts at Kingston College (2005 – 06), NESCOT (2007 – 08), and Brooklands College (2008).
Her own acting days are not over yet though: for her portrayal of Olive in Summer of the 17th Doll at Hampton Theatre she won the prestigious Richmond Arts Swan Award for Best Actress (2008), and (now the kids are getting bigger!) she plans to do more…
